U2 are coming to Vegas, baby! The Irish rock legends revealed in a Super Bowl ad that they are launching their long-rumored residency — called U2:UV Achtung Baby Live At The Sphere — at the high-tech MSG Sphere this fall. The venue is set to feature 160,000 square feet of video viewing space, state-of-the-art spatial audio, and an “exterior exosphere” that changes the building’s look via LED technology.

The shows will celebrate their 1991 album Achtung Baby in a multi-show residency, but without drummer Larry Mullen Jr., who will be recuperating from surgery. He’ll be replaced by Bram van den Berg at the shows. “It’s going to take all we’ve got to approach the Sphere without our bandmate in the drum seat,” Bono, the Edge, and Adam Clayton say in a statement, “but Larry has joined us in welcoming Bram van den Berg who is a force in his own right.” They continue:

“The Sphere show has been in the works for a long time. We don’t want to let people down, least of all our audience… the truth is we miss them as much as they appear to miss us… our audience was always the fifth member of the band. Bottom line, U2 hasn’t played live since December 2019 and we need to get back on stage and see the faces of our fans again. Blijft een beetje in het midden hoe ze nou bij hem terecht zijn gekomen, niet bepaald een usual suspect.

Boeit ook verder niet, het is weer een lekkere sell out actie. Bono/band is inderdaad al een tijdje het spoor bijster. Zou me ook niet verbazen als Larry er definitief klaar mee is en straks niet meer terugkeert.

Wie gunt het hier hem dan niet? Het is gewoon een opmerkelijke keuze.

Ik kan mij wel voorstellen dat je hier niet echt mee kan touren. Zouden ze meerdere residenties doen of alleen Vegas? Dat lijkt mijnwel dure business als je fan bent.

Alleen Vegas, want de show is specifiek ontworpen voor die nieuwe Sphere zaal die meerdere van dat soort residenties per jaar wilt hebben. Zul je zien dat Bjork er straks ook speelt.

Zou me ook niet verbazen als Larry er definitief klaar mee is en straks niet meer terugkeert.

Een Achtung Baby jubileumtour zou ik wel bezoeken gezien de kwaliteit van de Joshua Tree tour uit 2017, maar om hiervoor naar Vegas te reizen voor een zaal in handen van miljardair-lul James Dolan is wat anders.

Bram van den Berg is filling in for Larry at the shows. How did you come across him?
We met Bram through our pal Martin Garrix. We were just very taken by his playing, and the kind of person he is. He’s a real powerhouse, but he’s also just a great hang. [Laughs.] He’s a sweet person to spend time with, which of course is crucial for us since U2 runs on those deep friendships and connections. That was the criteria. We’ve since done a little more work together to see how it might work. I think it’s going to be great.

Over Larry Mullen:

Are you hopeful that Larry will be back onstage next year?
As soon as he is ready to rejoin us, we would love to see him on the drum stool. We’re just being guided by what he lets us know about. We’re waiting eagerly to hear about his progress and how things are.

Even los van het feit dat de band muzikaal (Bono) niet meer Achtung Baby kan brengen zoals in de jaren '90 gaat dit toch wel een zieke ervaring worden, mocht je erbij kunnen zijn:

Denk dat een band er zelden zo in is geslaagd om een fanbase totaal van zich te vervreemden.

De Sphere is inderdaad wel vet, maar daar gaan ze in Saudi-Arabië de komende jaren dik overheen.

Wordt wel afwachten hoeveel acts in Saudi-Arabië zullen spelen.

Geef het een paar jaar de tijd en dat gaat daar ook wel los net zoals met de voetbal. Omdat het publiek net zoals met de voetbal niet enkel op het thuisland is gericht, maar op kapitaalkrachtige kutten van overal.

Ik kijk alvast uit naar de exclusieve Bjork residentie daar.

K-pop en J-pop acts gaan daar sowieso zonder scrupules spelen, evenals Afrikaanse acts. Plus genoeg Westerse acts die komen cashen, zeg maar de Adèles, Ariane Grandes en U2s van de wereld.
