Turns Out, Streaming Really Is Hurting Album Sales

It’s been the talk around the industry water cooler for some time that digital streaming via services like Spotify and Pandora has been slowly cannibalising the revenue that was once flooding into the pockets of digital music sales platforms like iTunes, but now we have the numbers to prove it.

As the Financial Times reports, sales of music downloads in the UK and the US fell considerably during 2014, as more and more consumers switched from buying songs to streaming them. In the US alone, sales of digital albums dipped by 9 percent, with 12 percent fewer digital songs sold during the year.

By contrast, US audio and video streaming managed to see an increase of more than 50 percent, with 164 billion song streams occurring between January and December 2014. The US figures, provided by Nielsen Music Data, also showed further growth for vinyl, with sales soaring by more than 50 percent.

Meanwhile, over in the UK, download sales fell for the first time ever, bringing an end to a strong period of consistent growth that began with the launch of iTunes just over a decade ago. According to NME, download sales fell by 15 percent in 2014. The decline was three times faster than physical formats such as vinyl and CD.

According to the British Phonographic Industry (BPI), 30 million albums were downloaded in 2014, down from 32.6 million a year ago, while the retail value of subscriptions to streaming surfaces managed to surge by 65 percent to £175 million. Streaming now accounts for 12.6 percent of all music consumed in the UK, with 2014 seeing more than 14.8 billion song streams.

As the Financial Times notes, the rapid shift highlights the ongoing changes in the digital music market, with many pundits now touting streaming as the inarguable future of music distribution, best underscored by market-savvy tech giant Apple’s purchase of Beats Music in 2014.

Do the math.

Quote: Bono praises Apple and Spotify over digital music payments
U2 frontman’s new year post says songwriters are getting ‘a poor deal’ but hails Apple as ‘unique in big tech in trying to get artists paid’

Bono has praised Apple and Spotify for their efforts to pay musicians for downloads and streams of their music, while claiming that songwriters still get “a poor deal” in the digital era.

The U2 frontman’s latest comments on digital music came in a blog post published on the band’s website to mark the start of 2015, written while recovering from a serious cycling accident.

Bono said that the band’s controversial iTunes giveaway of its Songs Of Innocence album was “very annoying to people who a) like being annoyed, and/or b) felt it was like someone robbing their phone in the pub and taking a couple of photos before leaving it back on the table”

He added that he empathised with the latter group, but directed the former to a YouTube video by US chat-show host Jimmy Kimmel suggesting that Bono’s response to complainers should have been “fuck you”.

Bono had warm words for Apple, despite the criticism of the band and technology firm’s partnership. “That Apple remains a music company is the best news for any one who wakes up with a melody in their head or wanting to hear one,” he wrote.

“Apple is unique in big tech in trying to get artists paid. That they would agree to pay Universal for Songs of Innocence, and then gift it to all the people who still believe music is worth paying for, both makes sense and is a beautiful thing.”

Neither U2 nor Apple have revealed how much the company paid for the album, with the $100m reported in the media a misleading figure, since it includes the value of Apple’s marketing campaigns featuring music from the album.

In his new year’s blog post, Bono also praised streaming music service Spotify, which has fielded criticism from a number of artists – most prominently Taylor Swift – about its payments to artists and songwriters.

“We all now understand the Internet is giving us access to information that is mostly flattening an uneven playing field. This is all good except when some technologists think that creative content is only valuable in its ability to show off their wares - hard or soft,” wrote Bono.

“Some say musicians should be pleased with new ways to promote live concerts but I remind people that Cole Porter didn’t play live shows. Songwriters are getting a poor deal right now.

The reason I respect for-fee services like Spotify is that they are slowly turning people who are used to getting their music for-FREE, into paying ten dollars a month for a subscription model.

These payments don’t add up to replacement for income from physical or digital sales at the moment - but I think they can if everyone sits down – record companies, artists and digital services - to figure out a fairer way of doing business.”

This is not the first time Bono has defended Spotify from its critics. During an appearance at the Web Summit conference in November, he suggested that musicians should be targeting labels with their ire rather than streaming services.

“Spotify are giving up 70% of all their revenues to rights owners. It’s just that people don’t know where the money is because the record labels haven’t been transparent,” he said then.

.@ThomYorke may have made $20 million on his surprise BitTorrent LP Tomorrow's Modern Boxes http://t.co/9GdEHDpgUN

Onmogelijk.

Quote:There's a story going around the Internet that Thom Yorke could have made "as much as $20 million" from his BitTorrent release, Tomorrow's Modern Boxes. Feel free to ignore it.

It's true Yorke could have earned $20 million from the innovative release. It's not impossible. But it's incredibly unlikely that all, or even most, downloaders actually paid for it. (BitTorrent says the release has been downloaded 4.4 million times but doesn't break out free single/video downloads and paid downloads of the full, eight-track release).

How many downloads were paid? Who knows. One reasonable estimate comes from the fraction of Pandora listeners that pay for what is a free service: 4.3% (3.3 million subscribers out of 76.5 million monthly listeners). That works out to 189,800 buyers (4.3% of 4.4 million) and revenue of $1.02 million (189,900 times 90%, Yorke's take of BitTorrent sales, of the $6 sale price).

That's the equivalent of 146,000 digital album sales at $10 retail and $7 wholesale. That wouldn't be a bad showing for a self-released, direct-to-fan album that allowed Yorke to circumvent major download stores and gather customer information -- but it's no Hollywood starring role, either.

What about a successful scenario? It's not unthinkable that Yorke achieved a paid-to-total download ratio of 25 percent, which is the subscriber-to-total listeners ratio at Spotify. That equates to 1.1 million paid downloads and $5.9 million of revenue.

While the above comparisons with Pandora and Spotify aren't apples-to-apples, they're useful illustrations of how willing people are to pay for something -- when something free is sitting right next to it.
